We examine what is going on mechanically as we pull along the full length of the bow as well as how to begin developing beautiful tone. If done correctly over time, this exercise can take a student from not being able to pull a whole straight bow, to getting a truly professional sound. The first installment in a bow exercise series that covers all the foundational movements that your bow hand needs to get beautiful tone and execute a variety of bow strokes. Rabbits solidify your bow hold while encouraging flexibility. It centers the bow hold with the thumb and the middle finger as the fulcrum and teaches that the fingers don't have to squeeze the bow. Collé motion further develops flexible fingers but in a different direction than the previous exercises. This motion makes it so we can pull the string side to side using only our fingers. Turns out this is VERY important for violin playing particularly as notes get fast. Ring the bell is one of the most versatile exercises in the series. It helps establish posture and the appropriate bow angle at the most difficult point to keep a straight bow-- the tip. It demands that you get clear, powerful articulation up there and warms up the whole bow length by following through past the frog. I start most lessons off with this exercise to help the mind become more aware of the body and to get the bow arm moving.
